Through the magnificent mountains and wooded valleys, where winds pass by you spreading a wave of chill, Pashmina’s story is entrenched in a beautiful, mesmerising landscape, than merely the woven fabric we see it as. It’s romantic origins create an incomparable feeling of love and warmth. Wrapped around the body, it feels like the embrace of a beloved. It’s gentle caresses enveloping you in sweet warmth.
As we glide our fingers across this 6-8 microns of exquisiteness, it’s softness can be felt in every fibre of the delicate fabric. Being hand spun and intricately woven, it exudes transcendent elegance.
Pashmina, from the Persian word ‘pashm’ meaning finest wool fibre, is popularly known in the West as cashmere wool. Pashmina’s warmth and tenderness arises from it being the unique very thin short inner coat of hair of the Himalayan mountain goat, called Chyangra (Capra Hircus) which lives in the remote regions of Tibetan Plateau and the high Himalayan regions of Nepal. They grow this undercoat every winter and shed it in the spring. One Himalayan goat produces 3 to 8 ounces of Pashmina per year.
It is entirely processed by hand, from combing and spinning, to weaving and finishing. The art of Pashmina weaving is centuries old, and is being carried out by specialized craftsmen and women, who have inherited the skills from their ancestors and continue to practice it. The approximate craft time put into producing a single Pashmina stole (70x200cm) is 180 hours. The resulting product is sheer elegance and grace, the possession of which brings in the pride that it commands and deserves.
Today, most of the world’s pashmina products are woven on a warp of spun silk giving them an exotic silky texture, lightness, increased suppleness and strength. Be it pure pashmina or silk blended pashmina, it is remarkably soft and light, yet exceptionally warm.
