Kantha Stitched Clutch

Bolpur, West Bengal

Kantha began as a way of giving worn saris a second life, quilting layers of soft cotton with rows of running stitch. This clutch carries that same rippled, hand-quilted surface, gently puckered under the fingers. The stitching is both the structure and the decoration. Each piece varies in thread colour and rhythm, because each pair of hands does.

The hands
Layers of soft cotton are held together by thousands of small running stitches, worked in the lap over many sittings.

Buying handmade keeps a craft in work. That is the whole model — no middle story.
