Papier-Mache Keepsake Box

Srinagar, Kashmir

A lidded box in Kashmir's papier-mache tradition, where the moulding and the painting are separate skills, often done by different hands. The surface carries dense hand-painted flowers in the naqashi manner, sealed under a coat of varnish that gives it a soft lacquered depth. Surprisingly light; made for jewellery, letters, or dried rose petals.

Soaked paper pulp is moulded and smoothed into the box form, then a painter lays on fine floral patterns with a squirrel-hair brush before the surface is sealed.

Buying handmade keeps a craft in work. That is the whole model — no middle story.
