Papier-Mache Hanging Ornament

Srinagar, Kashmir

A small round ornament of pulped paper, painted by hand in the dense floral patterns Kashmiri artists call hazara — a thousand flowers. The surface is sealed with varnish so the colours keep their depth. It weighs almost nothing, hangs from a simple cord, and each one carries slight differences of brushwork.

Waste paper is soaked, pulped and layered over a mould, then the dried shell is painted freehand with a fine squirrel-hair brush.

Buying handmade keeps a craft in work. That is the whole model — no middle story.
