Lac-Turned Stacking Rings

Channapatna, Karnataka

Graduated rings of hale, the soft ivory wood Channapatna turners have worked for generations, stacked on a rounded central post. The colours come from lac tinted with vegetable-origin dyes, fused into the wood itself and burnished with a dry screwpine leaf, so there is nothing to flake or peel. Smooth in a small hand, satisfying to sort, topple, rebuild.

The hands
Each ring is turned on a lathe from ivory wood, then coloured by pressing a stick of vegetable-dyed lac against the spinning surface until the heat melts it in.

Buying handmade keeps a craft in work. That is the whole model — no middle story.
