Graduated rings of hale, the soft ivory wood Channapatna turners have worked for generations, stacked on a rounded central post. The colours come from lac tinted with vegetable-origin dyes, fused into the wood itself and burnished with a dry screwpine leaf, so there is nothing to flake or peel. Smooth in a small hand, satisfying to sort, topple, rebuild.
